I came across an article in the week, discussing the reasons why data visualisation is better than the notorious static crystal report, or excel spreadsheet. 

Why Visualise your Data?

One of the biggest success factors behind implementing an IT solution is ensuring you can not just access your data, but make sense of it.  Turn your raw data into useful information, to be distributed across your organisation to provide visibility.  Examples of which can include:

• Are sales up this month, on last?
• Highlighting the success of a new initiative or campaign.
• Running monthly board reports, ahead of the monthly management meeting.
• Get a simple headcount of your employee's across each department.
• Finding the figures to complete the reports from the National Statistics Office.

There are a multitude of questions we need to ask our data on a daily, monthly, quarterly and annual basis.  Access to this data should be simple and informative. 

Example: Sales Data in a Dashboard

There is a real drive to push towards more real time reporting, through the use of dashboards and charts.  This visual representation can quickly deliver the answers being sought from the report.  Having the ability to see a line graph showing the direction of sales month on month is much easier to interpret, than a table of data whereby you need to follow each column / row to see whether the figure is positive.  Using a line graph in this example also let's us quickly see where the peaks in sales were, and to identify trends.  Want to compare that to last years sales, fine let's plot the two together and immediately you can compare the trends from last years sales, to this years.
