Install RCP command Windows 7

I have just spent a good hour or two trying to figure out how to install RCP command Windows 7.  Stack Overflow had the answer, and I was so happy to find it, I want to share the steps used to solve it!

The Hunt

Every article on technet, and the various Microsoft forums all pointed at turning the Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications windows feature on.  Unfortunately that feature does not seem to be available on Windows 7 Pro anymore.  On reading a little more I did see it might be available on 7 Ultimate, but I don't have a copy of that, and didn't want to upgrade.Following various forum's I tried downloading a variety of packages that apparently contained the feature but I was unable to get one to install on the Windows 7 PC!  * Starting to lose patience *!In steps StackOverflow ... with access to an old PC on which the RCP command is available, can we simply copy the required executables / DLLs onto the new Windows 7 PC?!

Solution

To summarise, to install RCP command on Windows 7, do the following:If you have access to a PC or device, running Windows XP, browse to C:\Windows\system32.Look for the following executable's on the XP machine and take a copy of the following files:
rcp.exersh.exe
In the same folder, take a copy of these DLLs too:
advapi32.dllkernel32.dllmsvcrt.dllmswsock.dlluser32.dllws2_32.dll
Copy these into a new folder on the Windows 7/8/10 PC.  For example, copy to C:\Windows\MakeRCPWorkForMePleaseThen, on the same Windows 7/8/10 PC, click:Start >> Right-Click My Computer / This PC  >> Select Properties >> Advanced System SettingsClick Environment VariablesUnder System Variables locate Path and double click top open it.At the end of the Path text, add the location of the new folder created containing the copied executable and DLLs:
;C:\Windows\MakeRCPWorkForMePlease
Windows 7 now recognizes the RCP and RSH commands !!!
